HIGH POTENTIAL TESTING - A NECESSARY EVIL

DC High Potential (or Hi-pot) testing indicates the condition of the insulation of medium to high voltage cables. This test is a necessity for new cable to ensure that it will not fail upon energization. This also gives base line data for future maintenance testing for trending purposes. This is a destructive test since the voltage rating of the cable is surpassed, but will give advance warning of an impending failure. We also have the expertise and equipment to find the failure if it exists.

AC Hi-pot testing is used on medium voltage vacuum breakers or contactors to ensure the integrity of the system. This will indicate the condition of the vacuum inside of the bottle.
